Icebound Monsters
« on: April 13, 2008, 08:14:38 PM »

I looked through the Icebound Gazetteer and found only one new monster (new as far as I know). I would like for use to make a list of 1) existing ice monsters, 2) new versions of known ice monsters, and 3) new ice monsters.

Now, I don't know all the monsters in the existing setting, but I'll start this with some I know of, and some I'd like to see:

Existing Ice Monsters
Criosphynx (By extension, gynosphynx)
Frost Worm
Icedevil
Ice Mephit
Frost Giant
Yeti (Abominable Snow Man)
White Dragon

New Ice Monster Versions
Chixie (Cold Pixie)
Cold Fiend
Cold Sludge
Freezing Ooze
Frost Elf
Frozen Horror
Ice Dragon (Intelligent)
Ice Elemental
Ice Golem
Tundral Golem
Ice Spawn
White Render

New Ice Monsters
Caglodyle
Frost Mite
Tundrite

I have no suggestion for the new ice monster names I came up with. They just came to me as an idea. If someone is inspired enough to add descriptions to them, feel free.

Name some of your own.

I haven't officially named the creature yet, but the current name I have for it is - Ice Tusk, inspired by an animated series that had a magic infused creation that looked like a blind stone elephant.

I also was trying to adapt Ogres into a Glacier Ogre.  And before the original chat discussions went down hill, I had also volunteered to make an icy template that could be applied to corporeal creatures.   I had other things that I had volunteered to do...but i would have to look those up again.

I personally have a fondness of possibly less powerful monsters and above all those that can be easily mistaken as "weak". Also an artic setting could be limiting the druids and rangers in their choices for animal companions, my favorites to modify. Possibly arctic variants of the companion listing with some explainable power (besides just making them "dire") to up the danger they present above their "normal" counterparts could add a twist in the mundane wilderness encounters.

Ice variants such as imps or quasits are possible

The Ridgeback Wolves are built for stamina, possessing features designed for long-distance travel. Their narrow chests and powerful backs and legs facillitate efficient locomotion which make them capable of covering several miles trotting, wolves only run fast when testing potential prey, thereby making them an efficient pack hunter that will kill anything they can catch. Pack hunting revolves around the chase, as wolves are able to run for long periods before relenting.
The wolf is a very active, cunning carnivore, capable of surviving in nearly every climate. Shrouded in mystery and suspicion, they are viewed as vicious killers that slaughter men and animals alike for the lack of better things to do. (The chance of encountering a rabid wolf is 1%, if a lone wolf is encountered.)
A typical Ridgeback wolf has fur in multiple shades of grey, grows to 7 feet long, standing 4 feet tall at the shoulder and weighing some 500 pounds. They are characterized by powerful jaws; wide strong teeth; bushy tails; tall, strong ears; and round pupils. Their eyes, a gold or amber color, seem to have an almost empathic ability.
Combat
Wolves, in the interest of saving energy, will only chase one potential prey for the first thousand or so meters before giving up and trying at a different time against a different prey. Solitary wolves depend more on smaller animals, which they capturing by pouncing and pinning them, with their front paws, to the ground. Wolves do not always have the chance to eat each day; in fact, wolves rarely eat on a daily basis, but instead compensate by eating up to a maximum of 10 kg (22 lb) at a single sitting.
Ridgeback wolves prefer to attack in packs, surrounding and flanking a foe when they can. Mated pairs or packs work together to bring down large game, while lone Ridgeback wolves usually ambush and chase down creatures smaller than themselves. Both often use hit-and-run tactics to exhaust their quarry. A pack usually circles a larger opponent: Each wolf attacks in turn, biting and retreating, until the creature is exhausted, at which point the pack moves in for the kill. If they get impatient or heavily outnumber the opponent, Ridgeback wolves attempt to pin it.
Stunning Bite (Ex)
A Ridgeback wolf can attempt a stunning bite on a foe damaged by its bite attack without making a touch attack or provoking an attack of opportunity there by forcing it to make a Fortitude saving throw (DC 10 + ½ HD + Wis modifier), in addition to dealing damage normally. A defender who fails this saving throw is stunned for 1 round. A stunned creature drops everything held, can't take actions, takes a -2 penalty to AC, and loses his Dexterity bonus to AC. A Ridgeback wolf can attempt a stunning attack once per day for every HD it has, but no more than once per round. Constructs, oozes, plants, undead, incorporeal creatures, and creatures immune to critical hits cannot be stunned.
Skills
A Ridgeback wolf has an Intimidate +4 as well as a +2 racial bonus on Hide, Listen, Move Silently, and Spot checks.
*It also has a +4 racial bonus on Survival checks when tracking by scent.
Habitat/Society
Ridgeback wolves, like humans and demi-humans, are social animals. They live, hunt and play in families. There is a very strict social structure in these family groups that is continually followed. Each pack is led by an alpha male; his mate is the alpha female. Only the alpha male and alpha female breed, but the second ranking female often helps in whelping and nursing duties.
Ridgeback wolves prefer areas not inhabited by other large predators. Their domain has many terrain features in which they can play. Large rocks, fallen trees, and brooks play an important part in their recreational activities. Ridgeback wolves will leave an area once humans move in.

Ecology
Ridgeback wolves being keystone predators, are an important part of the ecosystems to which they typically belong. The wide range of habitats in which wolves can thrive reflects their adaptability as a species, and includes temperate forests, mountains, tundra, taiga, and grasslands. Fear of the Ridgeback wolf has resulted in their extinction in many areas. This genocide results in a marked increase in rodents and deer population that has nearly demolished the surrounding ecosystems.

Suggested Feats
Ability Focus, Improved Natural Armor, Improved Natural Attack, Cleave, Dodge, Great Cleave, Improved Initiative, Mobility, Power Attack and Toughness

Really nice, in need of editing, but very nice.  Standard wolves will always be available to this world too of course because they can live in any climate.  Especially like the Stunning Bite(EX) ability.  I'm actually in the process of standardizing the stat block format for my own setting, so maybe I can lend that format to the icebound setting as well.

Since I am in the middle of organizing my setting a few of my icebound projects have been stalled for an undetermined amount of time.  Though I will attempt to post either the Glacier Ogre, or the Glacier Tusk(name change pending) in the near future for contributions.
