Special Icebound Race
« on: April 13, 2008, 08:17:31 PM »

I was thinking that it would be cool to have one special new race available as player characters specific to the Icebound setting. Something unique that would be fun to play. An intriguing race with a special history that people will want to play. Post whether you're keen on the idea or not, and feel free to post any ideas.

I see such a race as requiring the following things:

A cool, catchy, and easily remembered name
Be original (Not a branch or rehash of a common race in any known game)
Contribute well to an ice world setting
Contribute to the party as a whole
Expand the depth of Icebound's setting

Example: Tiefling. These were original and add a lot to their core setting.

It was discussed in the gazeteer that there are ice elves.  Though this is likely been already devised by someone.

Not so sure that fits the cake so to speak, though with distinct differences we can aim away from it.

Was created for Icebound.  Just one possibility.

Yeah, the goal I was shooting for with this discussion is a core race for Icebound. One that would feature prominently in campaign groups. A race people will want to play.

A race that was brought out in the old Dragon Magazine and I saw at least an updated 3.0 version of it was the Uldra. Not sure that would be a race people would really want to play considering it's not an elf or human. A cold enviroment setting race that is sort of a mix between dwarf and gnome. Just a possible suggestion.

Just looked who published it. It's listed as a new race in the Frostburn setting book.

Could be problems with copyright if it's from a different published source.

I'm not so sure that Tieflings are the best example. They are, after all, the 'new drow', and very little else, when you really think about it.

Also, it would be a very bad idea (TM) to pull anything from Dragon Magazine at this point. Icebound cannot lift from other sources outside of declared OGL content.

I did have some notes and ideas on an 'ice-specific' race for the setting, but was waiting until things ... ahem... cooled down a little bit before I started posting and submitted heavily again.

I think your idea is a great start, but perhaps something a bit more original is in order.  Perhaps a whooly humanoid imp-like creature that can play as a trickster or thief.  Maybe a cold-based reptilian race or even just other monsters that can be a race if properly trained (think primitve beast with minimal intellect).

I have a few races that I'm working on for my own setting, I could let icebound borrow one or two.

Another idea I have goes along with the worship of the watery phoenix that's going to be play-tested on the 17th.

Now that I know Icebound is trying to remain as original as possible and only using OGL material when neccessary (I only attend 2 or 3 World Building sessions in RPG_Live) I'll crank up the creative engine. I might have something brewing already... Near-sighted, powerhouse fighter type, think wooly rhino. Smiley

Was thinking more along the lines of:

Muzorn

- +6 STR, +2 CON, -4 INT, -2 CHA
- Medium size
- Space/Reach: 5 feet/5 feet
- Base land speed: 30 feet
- Near-sighted, takes a racial -4 spot penalty
- Racial HD 3, BAB +3, FORT +3, REFLEX +1, WILL +1
- Racial Skills: Intimidate, Jump, Listen, Survival; +4 racial bonus on Intimidate and Survival
- Racial Feats: 2 Feats
- Weapon Proficiency: Greatclub and all simple weapons
- +5 Natural Armor
- Natural weapons: Gore 1d6
- Special Attacks: Powerful Charge
- Special Qualities: Ferocity, Stability
- Languages: Common and Dwarf; Bonus Giant, Goblin, Gnoll and Orc
- Favored class: Barbarian
- LA +1 (Not certain if this fits with the rest of the racial stats, I don't do this often)

You forgot to mention skill points[should be something like [2+Int]*6 due to 3 racial HD), and is it a monstrous humanoid or just humanoid?  Other than that it looks ok to me.  Though wouldn't call it a player race.
