Topic: New Icebound Classes (Read 2038 times)

Along with the Special Icebound Race and Icebound Monsters threads, I would like to discuss the possibilities of new classes specific to Icebound. One idea I came up with was the Ice Breaker. This would be a fighter class who has the duty of breaking barriers, particularly ice barriers, which would likely be the most common type of barrier on a world of ice. His duty is smashing. Another class idea is a Frost Mage who specializes in controlling frozen materials. Post your ideas for new classes in the Icebound setting here.

Frost Mage exists already as a prestige class in Frostburn.

There's already a frozen setting? That may require more familiarity with that setting so that we can create something unique and intriguing.

Since the Frost Mage already exists (though it could easily exist in Icebound as well), how about an Ice Druid?

Ah, good. Then it will contribute immensely to Icebound.

To start off the ideas for the icebound classes, I was thinking something along the lines of an explorer of the deep rock. A Dwarven Delver to be more precise.
Name always up for debate, just a place holder until things are worked out, and what follows is a rough idea.
First level ability, Tap - By tapping on the stone and veins of various metals that run through it you can tell how deep it runs and how far below the surface you have gone. This is very helpful when determining the direction to get home.
BaB as Cleric Saves - Fort, Ref Action Points? Yes or no on this - are we going to have these in icebound? Special - Tap - 4-6 Feats?
This is just an idea at the moment...end result may be something else entirely.

Ah, good. Then it will contribute immensely to Icebound. Since we are not affliated with WotC any longer, we can no longer use or cite material that is not explicitly OGL. This means that Frostburn is completely off-limits.

This means that Frostburn is completely off-limits. So I was thinking something like a master of beasts prestige-like class for well-natured druids. I am unsure but the idea has likely been used. So perhaps a name tweak and a spin on powers, etc, we can come up with something new and shiny?

Not that I'm aware of anyway, doesn't mean their isn't one out there though. DarkTortoise has a miniature called the Beast Shaman for their wargame miniature series. So its been done but not in the context we are using it, so not sure on rules for that. Either way though that can be nixed for safety purposes.

And there was a movie called Beastmaster, but I don't recall anyone suing over any of that business.
How about we just design the classes organically and openly right here, and a member of the staff can check them against pre-existing classes of similar concept to make sure we have something different? It's very difficult to go in and say "Hey, they stole our intellectual property!" when these concepts are natural outgrowths of the setting. Also, having someone take the extra step to ensure that these classes aren't cookie-cutters of classes already created shows due diligence to avoid using someone else's class.
Seriously, is there a single class concept that we can all say WotC has never touched upon anywhere else? All we can do is try to make sure that we're not unintentionally ganking one.
